‘Utter nonsense’: Indian ‘baraat’ with 400 guests dances through New York City’s Wall Street, viral video sparks debate

Dressed in traditional attire, a massive crowd is seen dancing joyfully, radiating energy and excitement as they celebrate the ceremony. Sharing the video on Instagram, Saloni Mehta, one of the guests at the big fat wedding, wrote, “Shutting down Wall Street for Baraat, still wrapping my head around it! This wasn’t just a celebration, it was history in the making. One of the craziest, most surreal moments of my life and that they are officially married.”

In another footage, the wedding party dances to upbeat tracks played by the DJ. At the center of the celebration are the bride and groom, standing out in a red lehenga and beige sherwani, respectively, moving to the beat with smiles.

Social media users reacted to the clips soon after they came to light. The videos met with mixed reactions, with many criticising the arrangement. “Never thought I would be hearing empire state of mind’s dhol version , that’s wild,” a user wrote. “There is one thing missing aunties hanging from the balconies watching baraa,” another user said.

“Utterly nonsense, must be prohibited,” a third user reacted. “Many Indians end up spending their life savings on their wedding and borrow money at high interest rates just to show the world their fake image ! What a senseless overspending celebration,” a fourth user commented.
